This week was a big step forward for climate. There has been a lot of talk leading up to this moment and we are now starting to see early actions from the Biden Administration.
The early actions we have seen were mostly predicted, with a few surprises:
On Trump’s last day in office a Federal Appeals Court unanimously voted against the Trump Administration’s Affordable Clean Energy rule (the replacement to the Obama era Clean Power Plan), providing the agency with more flexibility for future policies. Read More
Are We On the Verge of Another Financial Crisis? The parallels between the last financial crisis and climate risk in financial services are easy to see. The biggest question is who will be holding the short stick if the climate subsidies like flood and wildfire insurance melt away.
Climate Change Led to Record Insurance Payouts in 2020 It was the fifth-costliest year for the insurance industry in 40 years. Global losses amounted to $83 billion, driven by a record number of severe storms and wildfires in the U.S.
The future is electric Last week we saw continued activity as the public markets embrace the electrification of transportation with the closing of the purchase of EVGo by the special purpose acquisition vehicle (SPAC) Climate Change Crisis Real Impact I Acquisition Corporation.
And in Germany, EV sales are surging, tripling year-over-year in 2020, with a record 27% share in December!
